Skeletown Sculpture

After wrapping up on the last project, I couldn’t wait to get started on making new things. This is a Skeletown sculpture that I made for my booth display at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. It’s only a month away! The sculpture was based on a T-shirt design that I made a few years back that showed Skully flying a kite. The image was also on my first Skeletown print.

This is made out of Super Sculpey Clay and painted with acrylics, adding a wire and tissue for the kite. I painted the whole thing over with brown paint and then wiped it away to give it an aged look. It felt good seeing this little guy in 3-D. Maybe some day I can make multiple castings of it!

The Halloween Wizard- Work In Progress

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

While waiting to get feedback from my publisher, I was able to sneak in some time to work on this sculpture. It was fun, but short lived. I probably won’t finish ’till after Halloween, but I wanted to share the first pass here.

Thank you for visiting,

Freshly Picked

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Hello all,

It has been a busy last few weeks as I’ve been working on my next kids book. I’ve also been slowly rebuilding this site after losing all my entries to a Spam attack earlier this year. Slowly the old entries are being recovered and replaced. I also have been getting ready for Wondercon, which is from February 27-March 1st at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. I will be at booth #713 with Mr. Jamie Baker and for the first time, I will be selling this little guy shown here, which I am excited about!

This is Sproutkin. This little guy spawned from a sculpture that I created awhile back and have recently been making plastic castings of it in my backyard. Each Sproutkin will come with a little clay pot along with a plant label. I hope to have at least 10 for sale at Wondercon, that is, if I can pull off making and painting them all by this week. It’s been a lot of fun growing these from scratch!

I will also have my new Mini Comic Book, T-t-tartamudo there!

Dia De Los Muertos Tehuana Sculpture

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

I found this picture frame at a thrift store awhile back and it reminded me of a tehuana dress, like those worn in Oaxaca, Mexico. They have these beautiful ornate head pieces. I sculpted the head out of clay and gave it an antique paint job.

Here’s another Halloween-inspired creation. This was a plain doll that I found at a thrift store and it was all brown-colored when I got it. I put it through the Halloween machine and this is what came out.

Paper Mache Attempt

Halloween Paper Mache

This was a fun side project that I would tinker with in the evenings of doing my regular work, last month. I wanted to try to make a jack o’ lantern plant out of paper mache. It took some time to do all the layers of newspaper strips, but a pop in the oven would speed the drying process. The end result isn’t quite like the sketch, but if anything, it served as a learning experience. I hope to try more someday.
