New Painting

August 3rd, 2008

Maya_02.jpg
Here’s a new painting that I just finished. It’s been awhile since I have painted and I needed to get this one out of me before I dived into the next kids’ book. I felt a little rusty doing it, and it didn’t turn out quite how I expected, but it’s finished.

Oldies

July 30th, 2008

I came across a few old pieces that I don’t think I’ve posted before…

bookgrowth.jpg
This was an abandoned image that I had hoped to use when I was redesigning my website.

maverix_auction05_1.jpg
This was a piece for a Maverix Auction that happened a few years ago.

maverix_auction_02.jpg
This was also for a Maverix Studios auction. It was a quick sketch done on the back of the paper found in a frame. If you look closely, you can see the measurements of the frame.

Just an old random sketch, and if I remember correctly, from the same pen that just passed away. (read previous entry)

Dying Pen Sketch

July 28th, 2008

trisketch.jpg

Today was a perfect day weather-wise and after getting some work done, I went and sketched outdoors. I had a pen that was almost out of ink. I’ve always enjoyed drawing with dying pens, but it pains me knowing, that sadly, it’s for a limited time. Thank you Sakura Pigma Brush Pen, you were so good to me! R.I.P.

Here we go again…here’s a new sketch!

Julieta Venegas en NYC

In an effort to vary the same old “here’s a new sketch” posts that I normally do, I thought I’d try to share a bit more… One of the cool things about New York are the free summer concerts that happen all over the city. There’s one concert in Central Park that I have been looking forward to the most. It’s from one of my favorite artists, Julieta Venegas, who is from Tijuana, Mexico. There was also a free Bon Jovi concert in Central Park which had a ridiculously huge line, but I went with the smaller Julieta line. I did the sketch of the shakespearean man below, (from previous post) with the open chest, while waiting in line. The concert was amazing. She jumped from guitar to piano and even to accordion! Here’s a sample of one of Julieta Venegas’ videos from a song that I really enjoy, and hope you will too:

NY sketches

July 13th, 2008

nysketches.jpg
These are some sketches I’ve done while in New York. They are from a pocket-sized sketchbook I carry when I’m out and about. Sometimes I try to sketch on the subway train, at least until I get dizzy, that’s why some have shaky lines. Most were done while waiting, waiting in line for the subway, waiting in a line for a concert, or waiting for a sudden rain to stop.

Something New

After lots of “here’s my new sketch” posts, I thought I’d switch it up and share a little bit of what’s been happening. I’m in New York and loving it. Every day stepping out the door is a new adventure, it’s the best feeling! Here are a few pictures from my travels through this incredible city.

A New York sunset after a summer rain.

An altered sign in Brooklyn.
chilidog.jpg
Genius: A chilidog with Fritos corn chips sprinkled on top! This was from my friends’ BBQ and inspired from a legendary hot dog place that no longer exists. Some things are always in front of us and then someone comes along and combines the goodness!
birdkite1.jpg
On Coney Island I saw this old man who made his own kite out of a garbage bag. It was beautiful.
mothergoose.jpg
This is a statue in Central Park of Mother Goose, that I found while on the hunt for an Alice in Wonderland Statue, which I heard is somewhere in the park. I’ve gone four times and have gotten lost through it each time- the park is HUGE! One of these days I’ll find it and it’ll be magical! I also accidently came across a statue of Hans Christian Anderson, while lost, and there was a storytelling event happening right by it, which was a nice surprise. Another nice moment was attending a free concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra in Central Park, while having a picnic under a tree with some friends. Hands down (so far) the best time was the night some friends and I played handball at 1:00 am with a huge Dora the Explorer ball, underneath the Manhattan Bridge. It was so fun that we even had an audience with some of New York’s garbage men who watched the whole thing go down!

This is a scene of Manhattan from a Brooklyn rooftop as the Brooklyn Bridge celebrated 75 years.

Thanks for reading.
